Prata Riverside Village welcomes “PARTI-cipation X Lisboa 2024 Ocupar a Cidade”
VIC Detail Image

From October 10th to November 16th, Prata Riverside Village will host and support the 10th edition of PARTI-cipation, under the name ‘PARTI-cipation X Lisboa 2024 Ocupar a Cidade’. This group exhibition, which will be free, will bring together artists from all continents and different art forms at the VIC Properties development in Marvila, Lisbon. The diversity of languages (installation, sculpture, painting, among others) and materials used by the artists, such as wood, paper, glass, metals and other natural and recyclable materials, reflects the artistic sustainability perspective of this project.

‘There is no art without the artist, and there is no artist without his medium.’ It is on this quote, by the philosopher Heidegger, that the project´s founders took their inspiration from. PARTI-cipation was created in Germany, in 2012, by a group of international artists based in Germany.  The artists meet in a different location every year to organise an international exhibition, inviting a local curator to select artists from that country. Together, they create a cultural dynamic of art dialogue and concept exchange that stimulates artistic creation and cultural promotion between countries.

In Lisbon, this project is the result of a collaboration between two curators from distinct countries, Germany and Portugal, with Ana Calçada as the national curator and Gottfried Hafemann as the international curator.

As a partner in the PARTI-cipation X project, Prata Riverside Village is hosting and supporting this international event, in which social actors, foreign and Portuguese artists and communities participate and highlight culture and Art. This project can be seen as demonstration of Prata and VIC Propertiescommitment to promoting art and culture.

For Sandra Rodrigues, Marketing Director at VIC Properties:

‘It is with great pride and enthusiasm that we welcome “PARTI-cipation X”, a unique exhibition that brings together artists of great quality’. Adding that: ‘Art is seen as a priority for VIC Properties and that’s why we believe that, more than a neighbourhood, Prata is also a space for culture and artistic expression.’

With a unique concept that promotes the idea of community, ‘PARTI-cipation’ has already taken place in nine cities in Europe, South America and Asia since 2012. After an edition held in Poland, and under the motto ‘Occupy the City’, the exhibition is now travelling to Lisbon, where it will be possible to admire the work of 25 renowned artists, 10 of whom are Portuguese, namely Beatriz Horta Correia, Graça Pereira Coutinho, Inês Amado, Luís Pintão, Miguel Gaspar, Pedro Valdez Cardoso, Samuel Rama, Sílvia Hestnes Ferreira, Susana Piteira and Thierry Ferreira.

With the aim of creating a closer relationship between the public and the artistic expression, ‘PARTI-cipation X’ will also feature a series of talks with various personalities who show the connection that art and culture share with different sectors of activity.

The day after the exhibition’s opening, October 11th, between 5pm and 6.30pm, the PARTI-cipation artists will be available to receive their visitors for informal talks.

As curator of the exhibition, Ana Calçada considers that:

‘The 10th edition of PARTI-cipation challenges the 25 artists to dialogue with the city and to draw inspiration for their works from Lisbon’s historical, multicultural and social environment.’

The project also involves the 28 Art Gallery and the Marvila Parish Council, as well as its residents, by promoting cycles of talks with the artists and commented tours of the exhibition aimed at different audiences, such as young people, seniors and residents. Through this exhibition, VIC Properties is once again trying to integrate art into the city of Lisbon, bringing a strong cultural component to the capital’s eastern riverside area.

The curator, who is responsible for the exhibition in Portugal, Ana Calçada, also explains that:

‘PARTI-cipation is built on the heterogeneity of the artworks, even when they appear to be irreconcilable, forming a puzzle that reveals itself as a coherent whole. Each work carries its own narrative, a fragment of reality which, when placed in dialogue with other works, generates new interpretations and connections.

This coexistence of different artistic languages is intended to challenge visitors to question their own perceptions and prejudices, broadening their understanding of art and society. By coming together in a common space, they form an ‘ecosystem’ that reflects the collective complexity of individual sensibilities,’
